His voice is surprisingly alarmed, ringing through the emptiness of the room and seeming to fill endless voids of the universe. He takes a step forward and she takes a step backward, dagger precariously held near her neck. She swallows thickly, trembling all over, and wishes for strength to stand strong. Then, quicker than he can stop her, she slashes the dagger.
Strands of hair drift down to the floor. They are a lifetime of memories, a story long forgotten, and he can't stop staring at them.
"Long hair," she tells him, "will get in the way."
